Knockshee & Slieve Fadda - Try Hiking Series

Old Killowen Road, Killowen, Down, BT34 3AE
Hiking Western Mournes

About

A beginner level hike not far from the idyllic village of Rostrevor, in the western Mournes. Walk through beautiful forests, open mountain and gain 360 degree views of the Mournes and Cooley Range across Carlingford Lough - absolutely STUNNING!

After meeting roadside at the Killowen old Road, Rostrevor, and after the usual brief and kit check, we'll head on up the track and start out on a lesser walked yet absolutely beautiful walk in the Western Mournes.

Starting off on the tarmac, we walk uphill and quickly find ourselves in a gorgeous little forest with a gravel path. As we walk through this wood, we often get the most awe inspiring beams of light passing through the trees - you don't get it quite like this anywhere else in the Mournes, so it's worth it just for this alone!

Once out of the forest, we're onto open mountain land, still on a great mountain track, and now we can see our two goals, Slieve Fadda and Knockshee. We come to Slieve Fadda first, a broad flat topped mountain (as the name fadda suggests for any irish speakers out there!), before going along a flat ridge to the cone shaped Knockshee, where you'll see 360 degree views that are simply stunning! After lots of great pics and social media stories, we'll head back down the way we came from, with a nice introduction to hiking finished in style. If the group are fast and still feeling fresh, we can also take in a few other local peaks.

The whole trip out should take around 3 hours including breaks, and is suitable for anyone with a determined mindset and moderate level of fitness.
