If you’re looking for a scenic dog walk with a bit of adventure, Dundrum Coastal Path is a fantastic choice. Finn, the ever-energetic Border Collie, and I took on this beautiful route, and let me tell you—it did not disappoint!
A Walk with a View
We parked in the car park, off the main Dundrum Road (A25), and from the moment we set off, we were treated to breathtaking coastal views. The path runs along the old disused railway line, and forms part of the Lecale Way offering glimpses of Dundrum Bay and the Mourne Mountains in the distance. Finn was in his element, tail wagging furiously as he sniffed every blade of grass.
Dog-Friendly (But Keep That Lead Handy!)
One of the best things about this walk is how dog-friendly it is. There is dog bins dotted along the route, making it easy to clean up after your pup. You need to keep your dog on a lead as one little bridge has no railings—so if your dog is anything like Finn (who thinks he’s part mountain goat), best to hold on tight!
There are neighbouring fields with livestock, so it’s important to be respectful and keep your furry friend under control.
The path itself has conservation interest with a variety of semi-natural habitats along its length including herb-rich grassland, marginal scrub and scrub-woodland, marshy tall herb stands, brackish pools, and a narrow fringe of saltmarsh, you’ll also see a variety of bird species along the way.
Watch Your Step
While the path itself is well-trodden, it can get a bit slippery in places, especially after rain. Sturdy footwear is a must—Finn, of course, had no such worries, happily trotting ahead while I carefully navigated the more uneven sections.
Perfect Picnic Spot
At the car park there’s a lovely little picnic area, a perfect spot to take a break and soak in the scenery. I had packed a flask of tea and some treats for Finn, which he eagerly accepted after all his exploring. If you’re planning to bring a snack, just remember to leave no trace and keep the area clean for others to enjoy.
