About
Rowan became Commanding Officer of the Killyleagh and Killinchy Volunteers in 1786 and in 1791 became a founding member of the Dublin Society of United Irishmen. His life story is fascinating. Fergus Whelan states that 'he weathered the wrath of his own class and championed the causes of the poor and oppressed'.
Dublin-based historian, Fergus Whelan, has researched this period extensively and published three books: 'God provoking Democrat', 'Dissent into treason', and 'May tyrants tremble'. He has written in depth about the background and ideals which motivated so many to rise in 1798. This is a rare opportunity to hear Fergus speak about this subject.
