About
The Cabinet of Dr Caligari with Live Music Score is a silent film with live music accompaniment at Newcastle Community Cinema.
Amazingly over 100 years old now, and still considered the very zenith of the German Expressionist cinematic movement, this freaky, churning feast is compulsory viewing for all cinephiles. Stylistically, it still shocks and intrigues, with its peculiarly twisted shadows & visuals. The paper-thin plot ostensibly chronicles the fantasies of a bizarre hypnotist (Werner Krauss), who tricks sleepwalkers into executing his murderous fantasies. But the real star here in this silent trip is the sets and structures, brilliantly deployed to create unease - potentially making The Cabinet the first true horror film. Audiences were blown away when it was released in 1920, and it still retains its surreal powers today - our screening will feature a live musical accompaniment.
