Spoon Carving

Finnebrogue Woods, 26 Killyleagh Road, Downpatrick, County Down, BT30 9BL
Carved spoon

About

Woodcarving is arguably one of the most enjoyable of forest crafts.

Rob will provide you with a general introduction to woodcarving and will teach you the various wood types and how to identify them. You will learn how to use starter tools, hone your knife crafting skills & carving techniques.

Rob will take you on a guided walk through the woods and talk through material selection, tree ID and uses for wood carving including soft, hard and food safe woods.

After a gentle forage through the woods, we will gather around the campfire and start carving a wooden spoon. Once your spoon is complete, Rob will teach you the skill of kolrosing. Kolrosing is a very old method of giving fine line surface decoration to wood. It started centuries ago with simply using the tip of ones' belt knife to make fine decorative cuts, and then rubbing coal dust into it to bring out the pattern.

After you have incised the design on the spoon, you will rub in a darkening compound. Traditionally one uses sawdust from walnut or pine bark. However, fine dry coffee grounds, charcoal or paprika work beautifully.

This is a wonderful opportunity to spend a peaceful day in nature creating something beautiful that you will cherish for years to come. Lunch is included in the ticket price and the spoon carving workshops are available on the following dates-

October the 9th, 12th & 29th
November the 2nd, 13th & 26th
December the 3rd & 10th
