About

Free family drop-in activities inspired by summer holidays in County Down in the past.
You'll have the chance to handle real items donated to the Museum and contribute to a giant community seascape artwork. Or for those who like a bit of friendly competition, we'll be putting out some traditional games to play with the family. It will be nostalgic, creative, fun – and free!

There is no need to book, but activities may be busy. Children must be accompanied by an adult. If you require more information, please email Down County Museum.

There is always a lot to see and do at the Museum which is housed in the historic eighteenth-century Gaol. Visitors can see the conditions in which the prisoners were kept, and visit restored cells complete with displays on individual prisoners. The permanent exhibitions explore 9000 years of human history in this culturally rich region.

The Museum also hosts special temporary exhibitions which display objects from our varied collections. On display is 'Heydays and Holidays: A History of the Seaside Resort in County Down', that looks at the development of seaside resorts from the mid-1800s when the healing power of sea water and sea bathing became fashionable amongst the upper classes.

The Museum's latest attraction, the Ballykinlar Hut, is a unique recreation of one of the Armstrong Huts that once stood at the former Ballykinlar military camp. It features displays and stories from the period 1914 and 1950 ranging from soldiers on their way to the Somme, internees during the Irish War of Independence, American GI's and Maltese refugees during World War Two.

Entrance to Down County Museum is free of charge, from 10.00am to 4.30pm Tuesday - Saturday. All the rooms are accessible, with lifts operating on every level of the Museum. There is also an accessible toilet on the ground floor with baby changing facilities.
