About
On 12 and 13 July both Down County Museum and Newry and Mourne Museum will host free tours of the galleries and exhibitions which trace the social and political heritage of this historic region. Down County Museum is offering tours of the Gaol, which will provide a fascinating insight into the history of this institution and the stories of some of its prisoners.
There will also be tours of the Museum’s latest attraction, Ballykinler History Hut, a recreation of one of the Armstrong Huts that once stood at the former Ballykinler military camp. It features displays and stories from the period 1914 and 1950 ranging from soldiers on their way to the Somme, internees during the Irish War of Independence, American GI's and Maltese refugees during World War Two.
