About
Today the Quoile river and pondage in Downpatrick, provide an important haven for a diversity of local plant and wildlife species, as well as being a popular place for fishing and walking. But in the past the then tidal river was crucial to the development of Downpatrick's economy and trade bringing goods and people to and from the town.
If you have ever wanted to know more about the history of the Quoile and its port then why not take part in these walking tours of the riverbank and old quays.
Two very different tours will bring to life the stories of this fascinating area of Downpatrick and some of the people associated with the port.
Join Blue Badge guide Mairead Sweeney as she uncovers how important the Quoile was for the people of the area. The strategic importance of the Quoile to all who used it from the first settlers who sailed here thousands of years ago to the merchants who developed the shipping route, will be explored. The days when warehouses lined the river and the opening of the Steamboat Quay for passenger ships, will be contrasted with the frequent attempts to control the flooding of the river and the gradual decline of the port, until its revitalisation as a wildlife and leisure resource.
Please be prepared for all weathers with appropriate footwear, rain gear and a bottle of water. Please be aware that some paths are narrow and uneven.
Tour organised by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in conjunction with Clean Up the Quoile Group.
