About

Crafting for the Curious returns to Down County Museum this Easter Monday, with two different craft workshops taking place at 11.30am and 2pm.

Are you a curious collector who enjoys getting creative? Are you 6-12 years of age? Have you got some free time this February half-term? Join us to make your own unique version of an item from the British Museum collection, now on display in Downpatrick as part of the new British Museum Touring Exhibition, 'For the curious and interested'.

If you missed out over half-term, our 11.30am-12.30pm workshop will use the amazing Sapi carved ivory horn as inspiration, you will have the chance to decorate your own horn, using decoupage and painting. The original hunting horn was made by local craftspeople in what is now modern day Sierra Leone, and features images of Portuguese men who went to the West Coast of Africa to trade in gold, ivory and people. You'll see and learn more about the symbols and meanings of images on the horn, before being provided with all materials and guidance to make your own souvenir. And if you fancy making something different, the 2pm workshop uses the intricate engravings of shells by Wenceslaus Hollar as inspiration for your own shell-based craft, and looks at the tiny collection boxes used by Sloane to preserve some of his most delicate and tiny treasures. In these workshops, you will also have a chance to explore the touring exhibition with an expert guide.

The workshops are both free, but must be booked in advance. Please contact amy.button@nmandd.org or on +44 (0) 33 0137 4252 for more information and to book.

If you can't join us this time, you can see the hunting horn and the rest of the exhibition at Down County Museum until 13 April 2024.
