Celebration of Mass at Benediction Rock

Sandbank Road, Hilltown, Co. Down, BT34
Mass Rock at Altnataggart

About

A religious ceremony to commemorate the Mass Rock tradition in the Mournes, as part of the Back from the Boley 2022 collection.

The Mass Rock at Altnataggart, Hilltown, is where Mass was celebrated during Penal Times, when the free practice of religion was prohibited.

It is part of the great heritage of closeness between the people and the mountains that they turned to the mountains to sustain their faith in this difficult period. Because the altar was so high up, far from the road and difficult to access, it meant the priest and parishoners could see if the law was approaching and would have time to escape before anyone could climb up to them.
