Gallery 1
The graphics and displays in this gallery tell the story of Newry and Mourne from the prehistoric period up to the 16th century.
Artefacts on display include prehistoric, medieval and post-medieval material from archaeological excavations carried at Carnbane, on the outskirts of Newry, in 2011, a grave slab from a 11th century monastic foundation in the area and a stone carved with a human head and heraldic animal from the medieval Cistercian abbey at Newry.
This gallery also gives an insight into what life was like in Bagenal’s Castle and you will see the fireplace of the former kitchen with its original bread oven, a doorway with its drawbar hole and a basement dating from the 18th century when the Castle was converted into a merchant’s house.
