The core of the Railway Collection was collected by two brothers, Andrew and Barrie Domleo around the time of the closure of the Newry – Warrenpoint railway line in 1965. They generously donated this material to the Museum in 2018.
The Collection includes a wide range of artefacts including lamps used at Warrenpoint Railway Station, signal flags, equipment from signal boxes, station and railway coach signs in addition to ephemera such as tickets, timetables, excursion leaflets, dockets and labels.
This material is complemented by photographs taken by the Domleo which are a fascinating record of the closing days of the Newry – Warrenpoint Railway and the dismantling of the line in 1965.
Artefacts from other donors relating to Edward Street Station in Newry and the Belfast – Dublin line, the Bessbrook Electric Tram Company and the Newry, Dundalk and Greenore Railway are also included in the Collection.
