In 1993 Down County Museum embarked on a project to gather information on the convicts who had been transported from the County Gaol of Down to the penal colony of New South Wales.
Initial funding for the project was obtained from Interreg and a partnership was set up with the Institute of Irish Studies at Queen's University Belfast to place one of their junior fellows at the Museum to work on the project. The Friends of Down County Museum also contributed to funding the project.
Over a three year period the Museum gathered information on the 400 prisoners who were transported from the Gaol and constructed a database of information.
